Character building for 2D animation and Game Design

 Hey Guys!
Tuesday the 27th of July

During the holidays I was thinking of a different story to tell for 2D animation. Also during the holidays, I changed my major from Animation to Game Design, so I needed to think of a video game to make as well. So to keep it basic and simple in the character design would make it a lot easier, as learned from Principles.

Protagonist - Child

The child would be seen most/all the time during the story and the game play, so like to keep it simple, yet effective.

The Child's height compared to the world is quite small, probably the size of a regular coffee.

My inspiration for this character and story came from Little Nightmares and Mr Hopp's Playhouse, which are both video games. Both have the mechanics of hide and if there is sound, the enemies react and chase you until you get to a safe spot or hide before getting caught.

Antagonist - Father of Child

My plan for the story and game is to have the Father huge compared to the Child, but be reasonable size with the world. The visual representation is what the Child/Player would be seeing.

After sketch I asked Ruby (last term Principles Tutor and this term 2D Animation Tutor), here is her thoughts.

I had a quick research and I think the best example or inspiration from animated film style would be Attack on Titans, with their ratios, human and titans.

Also for the fact that in Attack on Titans, when the animation is focus on the human characters they only show part of the Titans, also the Titans animation is very limited. So when I'll be animating the Father, the body parts that are shown would be very limited. In the anime, the Titan also move quite slow, but that wouldn't be the case for Father.

By the way, haven't seen the anime fully, seen some snippets.

So the player/viewer would only see parts of the Father during the animation/video game and will possibly only see the full version in the end.

For the character movements/animation, was hard to find something, but my partner looked at my drawing and said it looks very much the Antagonist in Parasyte, Gotou. So I'll put Parasyte in my refences in design and possible animation, unsure with the difficulty.

The plan that I had previously was that the Father would move normally when not noticing the Child, then when notice, the Father would move quite quickly, like Gotou when he is fight the Protagonist.

Feedback from this blog/character idea:

Basically Nathaniel recommended for me to draw/idle the two character side by side, to see the design consistency.

Plan for next time, for tomorrow more than likely.
